Frutos Proibidos/Forbidden Fruits (Revisado/Reviewed)

Versão modificada do texto original após algumas observações críticas. Modified version of the original text after some critical remarks.

"Do you remember the first time you did something forbidden?"

If there is something about the Finnish cinema that I love very much is the introspection that they generally lead to. Whatever the plot is, you get yourself thinking about your own life, what you would do in similar situations. Or about your own similar feelings in different circumstances. Yesterday we watched "Kielletty Hedelmä" (Forbidden Fruit), produced this year and directed by Dome Karukoski.

The movie tells of two young girls who belong to the Laestadianism. This is a conservative christian movement that among other things does not allow anti-conceptive methods and other sexual liberties before marriage. One of the girls - Maria - is curious to know the external world - she wants to feel things - and decides to spend a summer out. Raakel is sent to take care of the friend, like an angel. In this period, they go through a number of different situations, good or bad ones. In the end, the religion remains in their hearts but the experience surprisingly changes them.

The fact that it deals with a religious creed as such feeds the polemic. However, even with the controversial background, the story of the girls made me travel within the question made above, copied from the poster of the movie.

E a música suave te leva.

The director made really good use of close-ups. The eyes, the hands... the fear for the morals, the desire for the cider - made of apple, as the waiter informed - And the soft music takes you. In the light eyes you see yourself. Remember?, they insist.

Aqui minha cabeça sai do enredo do filme.

Do we have to remember the first ones as if they were the last ones?, I ask. Why not keep doing "forbidden things"? Here my head leaves the plot. I am not thinking only about the "apple". I remember the pressures when I left my hometown for a bigger city, of some reactions when I decided to leave the country, of the surprised eyes when I decided to leave the work "only for studying"...

Is it so that only when you are young (and careless) that you have the right to try forbidden fruits? Is it so that after we grow up we need to stop discovering? Is it so that we have to punish ourselves everytime we wish to leave the ordinary, the routines? Is it so that we have to be stuck to traditions, to "the things as they are because they are like that and that is it?"

Why not letting ourselves go - with respect to the others and to oneself, and wisdom - for things that make us genuinely happy? That is what we see in the movie. Is it possible to be happy within the normal life? Yes. Is it possible that the different satisfies us better? Yes. The bad thing is to spend the life desiring something but hold oneself to the point of being safe and according to the "laws", even if suffering inside for not knowing the taste of the "sins".
